Over the City of Bozeman’s century and a half history, they have managed a diverse facility portfolio of municipal assets. Over that time, numerous buildings have been added to their portfolio through acquisitions and new construction; however, information on those buildings is often incomplete or missing. That’s where FOS of CannonDesign stepped in — to provide a thorough understanding of building systems via a facility condition assessment (FCA) in order for the city to effectively manage their assets and budget for necessary repairs and capital improvements.

At FOS, we utilize a consistent and proven assessment process that includes real-time data capture. Our team’s diverse perspectives allow us to understand the obligations of individuals across institutions, so we can deliver defensible decision-making information that is useful at all agency levels. For the City of Bozeman specifically, we needed to understand the general condition of high-priority buildings, their components, systems, and the short- and long-term financial needs.

This project was a significant undertaking that will have an impact on the entire city. Prior to partnering with FOS, the city did not have a successful internal asset management system (especially in terms of software). We set out to develop a central dataset of pertinent information for all city buildings, compiled in our FOScore® data collection software system. In anticipation of continued population growth, the data produced by this FCA enables Bozeman to accurately prioritize and plan maintenance and expansion efforts to accommodate increasing infrastructure needs.

Senior Project Manager Paul Pokigo’s favorite part of this project was the diversity of building types; “From small stone and log historical structures to brand new water treatment plants and complexes — this was a challenging yet engaging project and I look forward to establishing a reoccurring inspection cycle to help this client proactively budget for building maintenance.”

The 32 buildings assessed included the city’s most critical and frequently used structures, making up Phase One of FOS’ work for Bozeman with 100 additional assets planned for future phases.
