Academic Suitability

Great learning happens in spaces designed to support it.

A facility condition assessment tells you whether your buildings are sound. Suitability tells you whether they're truly serving their purpose. We help educational institutions at every level understand how well their spaces support the people and programs inside them, and where the greatest opportunities for improvement lie.

Beyond condition. Toward possibility.

Rectangle 51

A facility condition assessment (FCA) gives you a reliable picture of physical health. Suitability assessment goes a step further; asking whether your spaces are genuinely set up to support your educational mission — how well they serve learning, promote wellbeing, advance equity and adapt to where your institution is headed.

We conduct suitability assessments using the FOScore® KPI module, configured to your institution's specific goals, standards or state requirements.

Six Core Areas

Evaluations are organized across six core areas: educational program adequacy, learning environment quality, safety and security, student and staff wellness, accessibility and equity and operational adaptability.

Customized Scoring

Categories, measures and weightings are customized to reflect your priorities, and outputs produce clear, comparable scores across every building or campus in your portfolio.

Flexible Assessment

The suitability assessment works alongside a traditional FCA or as a standalone study, and the deliverables are built to support master planning, bond preparation, accreditation documentation and equity reporting.

Common challenges

The questions condition data alone can't answer.

Educational institutions invest significant resources in understanding their facilities. Suitability assessment builds on that investment by adding the context that turns good data into great decisions.

Modern Pedagogy & Accessibility

Understanding how well buildings support modern pedagogy, accessibility needs and equitable access to programs, beyond what a structural assessment can tell you.

Equity Framework

Building a consistent, objective framework for demonstrating equity across a portfolio to boards, communities and oversight bodies.

Master Plans & Bond Programs

Strengthening master plans and bond programs with data that connects facility investment directly to student outcomes and community values.

Capital Prioritization

Developing capital prioritization processes that account for programmatic needs, demographic shifts and institutional mission alongside physical condition.

Educational Adequacy Metrics

Producing the documented educational adequacy metrics that accreditation and state reporting frameworks increasingly require.

Future Planning

Planning confidently for the future by understanding how well your current facilities are already aligned with where you want to go.

Frequently asked questions

Have questions? We’re here to help.

What's the difference between a suitability assessment and a facility condition assessment?

A facility condition assessment tells you about the physical health of your buildings: what systems are aging, what's in need of repair and what it will cost to remedy. A suitability assessment asks a complementary question: Are these spaces actively supporting your educational mission? It looks at how well your facilities serve your programs, your community's values and your students' needs. The two assessments work together beautifully, and we often conduct them in tandem, but suitability data adds a planning dimension that condition data alone can't provide.

Can the assessment be configured to our district's or institution's specific standards?

Absolutely, and that flexibility is one of its greatest strengths. The FOScore® KPI module is designed to be configured around your specific goals, existing rubrics, state requirements or institutional standards. We can build a custom framework from scratch, adapt an existing one or apply established industry benchmarks. The categories, measures and weighting are all adjustable, so the output reflects what genuinely matters to your organization.

How does suitability data strengthen a bond measure or capital program?

It gives your capital program a much more compelling story. Condition data tells stakeholders that buildings need investment. Suitability data shows them why it matters for students, for equity and for the community's vision of what education should look like. When those two things are connected, the case for a bond measure becomes much easier to make and much easier for the community to rally behind. We've helped districts build that case successfully at significant scale.

How long does a suitability assessment take?

It depends on the size of your portfolio and the depth of evaluation you're looking for. For a single campus we can move quickly. For a large district or multi-campus university system, we scope the work to match your timeline and budget, and we're experienced at scaling assessment depth intelligently across large portfolios. The best starting point is a conversation about what you're trying to accomplish and we'll work backwards from there together.

Can suitability assessments support equity reporting or accreditation?

Yes, and this is one of the areas where they tend to deliver the most value. Our assessments produce clear, documented findings across accessibility, program equity, wellness and other dimensions that accreditors and oversight bodies care about. That documentation reflects a proactive, data-informed commitment to continuous improvement, which is exactly what those conversations call for. For districts with state adequacy requirements or equity mandates, the tool can be configured specifically to produce the metrics those frameworks require.
